To install bathroom mosaic tile correctly you have to start with a clean surface. Remove any kind of wallpaper or loose material from the wall and make it as flat as you possibly can. It’s a good idea to use a cement backer board behind the tiles. Make sure that you get something water-proof if you will be installing in the bathroom.
Once you have the surface ready, you can start to mix your thinset adhesive. This is most easily done with a drill and a mixing bit. If you are applying on a wall, you need to have a consistency that is thick enough to stay there and hold the tile. Don’t make it so thick however that it will clump. You can spread the thinset on with a notched trowel.
You can get bathroom mosaic tile with a mesh mounted backing. This way, most of the spacing is done for you and it is easy to put up a large amount of small tiles. It also makes it much easier to maintain a pattern if that’s the design that you have chosen. Be careful not to put up too much thinset at once as you do not want it to dry before the tiles are pressed onto it.
Always keep a level handy when doing a bathroom mosaic tile installation. It is important not only to keep the tiles flat, but you can use it to make sure that your grout lines are parallel and perpendicular to the floor. Once you have all of your tiles installed, allow them to set for at least 24 hours.
Once they have had a chance to set, you can start applying the grout. You can use a grout float to spread it and wipe away any excess grout with a sponge. It will leave a haze that you can clean off with a cloth in a day or so. Be sure not to fill the corners with grout; for these you should use an adhesive that can expand or contract. To ensure that the grout is really strong, keep wetting it with a spray bottle for about 2 to 3 days.
