Even the best tile installers cannot create a nice ceramic floor without having a clean and flat surface to work with. Make sure that you take out any bumps as these can not only show up in the floor but cause tiles to break. Give the floor an extra vacuum just to make sure and that way you will have no trouble getting the adhesive to stick to your floor.
When you purchase your tiles, make sure to get plenty extra as you will need to cut some of them when you reach the walls. You can also look into renting a wet saw; this can usually be done at your local hardware store. Make sure that your tiles have spacers. If they don’t, you will need to buy some.
Before you begin installing ceramic floor tile with the adhesive, you should lay out the tiles on the floor in the design that you’re going to use. Determine exactly where the center of the room is and mark it with a chalk line. If the design looks good, then you can start putting down tiles with the adhesive.
You can mix the adhesive with a strong drill and a mixing bit. You’re going for a consistency somewhere close to peanut butter. When you are ready to begin, start spreading the adhesive with a notched trowel. It is best to only lay down the adhesive in small patches and then put the tile down. When you place the tile on the adhesive, move it around a little and make sure that the entire back of the tile makes contact with the adhesive.
After you have finished installing ceramic floor tile, you should let it set for at least a day. After that it is safe to apply the grout. Spread it with a grout float and wipe off any excess. You can get the haze off the tiles later with a clean cloth or cheesecloth. In another week or so you can then apply a sealant. If you take the time to do it right, your floor will look like it was done by a professional.
